This river originates in the eastern part of the Tsurugi Mountains in Tokushima Prefecture and flows into the Kii Channel in the southern part of Tokushima City. It is approximately 65 km long. The river basin is made up of the Mesozoic Cretaceous Monobegawa Formation, and is rich in fossils. Yokoze in Katsuura Town, in the middle reaches of the river, was the terminus for the Takase boats during the riverboat transportation era. The upper and middle reaches of the river are where Unshu mandarins were introduced during the Bunka era (1804-18), and are now the largest mandarin orange growing area in the prefecture. The middle and lower reaches are known as sweetfish fishing spots. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
