1889‐1968
A writer of Minangkabau origin from Sumatra, Indonesia. Born into an aristocratic family in Padang, he studied at the Dutch School in Bukittinggi before moving on to veterinary school in Bogor, graduating in 1915. He was posted to Sumbawa as a veterinarian for several years, but spent most of his time until retirement in Semarang, Java. A representative writer of the Balai Pustaka (a publishing house established by the Netherlands) generation, his work Sitti Nurbaya (1922), which depicts the conflict between tradition and modernity over marriage, is a pioneering work of modern Indonesian literature and is still widely read today.

インドネシア，スマトラのミナンカバウ族出身の作家。パダンの貴族の家に生まれ，ブキティンギのオランダ学校で学んだのちボゴールの獣医学校へ進み，1915年に卒業した。獣医として，スンバワ島に数年赴任したが，停年までの大部分はジャワのスマランで過ごした。バライ･プスタカ(オランダの設立した出版局)世代の代表的作家で，結婚をめぐる伝統と近代の相克を描いた《シッティ･ヌルバヤ》(1922)は，インドネシア近代文学の先駆的作品であり，現在も広く愛読されている。
