159 BCE - 129 BCE King of the Kingdom of Syria. Reigned 139 or 138-129 BC. Second son of Demetrius I. He succeeded his brother Demetrius II, who was taken prisoner by the Parthians, and ascended to the throne. In 134 BC, he forced the Jews to recognize his suzerainty, and in his campaign against the Parthians (130-129 BC), he achieved success, initially recovering Babylonia and Media, but was defeated in a counterattack and killed. This led to the Seleucid Empire finally losing its eastern territories. [Oto Chiyuki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
