An old town in the northern part of the Izu Peninsula, Tagata County, Shizuoka Prefecture. Located along the Katsura River, a tributary of the Kano River, it developed around Shuzenji Onsen. The Izu-Hakone Railway runs through the town, and bus transportation is convenient, making it a popular destination for vacation homes. The hot springs are simple springs and have temperatures of 30-82°C. Tokko-no-yu, said to have been discovered by Kobo Daishi, and Shuzenji Temple are located here. In April 2004, it merged with Toi Town, Amagi-Yugashima Town, and Nakaizu Town in Tagata County to form Izu City. Area: 69.40 km2 . Population: 16,807 (2003). 静岡県田方(たがた)郡,伊豆半島北部の旧町。狩野(かの)川の支流桂川沿い,修善寺温泉を中心に発達,伊豆箱根鉄道が通じ,バス交通も便利で,別荘地としても発展している。温泉は単純泉など,30〜82℃。弘法大師の発見したと伝えられる独鈷(とっこ)の湯,修禅寺がある。2004年4月田方郡土肥町,天城湯ヶ島町,中伊豆町と合併し,伊豆市となる。69.40km2。1万6807人(2003)。
