A university in the Russian Federation. Founded in St. Petersburg in 1819, during the Soviet era it was called Leningrad University (officially known as AA Zhdanov State Leningrad University (Leningradskii gosudarstvennyi universitet imeni AAZhdanova, or LGU, for short), but in 1991 it reverted to its former name. Since the imperial era, it has contributed to the cultural and social development of Russia as a central institution of Russian culture.
