Girtin, Thomas
Born: February 18, 1775, London
[Died] November 9, 1802, London British watercolor landscape painter. Studied under watercolor painter E. Deys. From 1794 to 1797, he was employed by connoisseur T. Monro along with J. Turner, reproducing the paintings of J. Cousins. In 1796, he made a sketching trip to northern England and southern Scotland. He broke away from the topographical style of his teacher Deys and developed a style rich in lyricism. In 1801, he stayed in Paris for six months, and later produced a series of copperplate prints from the landscape sketches he made during this time. He died at the age of 27, six months after returning from Paris. Many of his works are in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
