Hansho

Japanese: 班昭 - はんしょう
Hansho

Date of birth and death unknown. A scholar of the Later Han Dynasty in China. Daughter of historian Ban Biao (3-54), sister of Ban Gu, and wife of Cao Shishu. Her brother Ban Gu compiled the Book of Han, but died leaving only the Biao and Astronomical Journal sections unfinished, so she followed his wishes and completed it. She was also invited to the palace by Emperor He to educate the empress and nobles, and was called Cao's great teacher. In the seven chapters of her work, Women's Admonitions, she outlines seven rules for how women should live their lives. These include being lowly and weak, husbands should control their wives and wives should serve their husbands, and acting with modesty.
