212 BCE? - 164 or 163 BCE King of Syria. Reigned 175-164 or 163 BC. Second son of Antiochus III. (Epiphanes (Theophanes)). After his father was defeated by Rome in 190 or 189 BC, he lived as a hostage in Rome. In 176 BC, his brother Seleucus IV replaced the hostage with his son Demetrius (later Seleucus I), and he returned to Egypt. In 175 BC, his brother was assassinated, and he shared the throne with his brother's son, who then killed him and became king. From 170 to 168 BC, he controlled Egypt, but was forced to retreat due to Roman interference. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
