A general term for insects belonging to the family Chrysopidae in the order Neuroptera, or one of these. These insects are medium-sized with a wingspan of 1.5 to 6.5 cm. Their eyes are shiny gold-green. Their bodies and wing veins are pale green to blue-green. They have transparent, lacy wings and fly in a fluttering motion. One theory is that they are stinky mayflies because some species emit a foul odor from their prothorax when touched. They are found in tropical to subarctic regions around the world, and about 1,350 species are known. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
