French novelist. His real name was Jacques Bouteloup. He was born to a wealthy cognac producer's family in Barbejoux, Charente, western France. He co-owned the literary publishing company Stock, but gained instant fame with his novel "Salute" (1921), which analyzed the delicate emotional entanglements between Albert and Berthe, a couple passionately in love. He dissected with almost scientific precision the subtle emotions that fluctuate between men and women, such as divorce in "Song of the Happy Ones" (1927), inheritance in "Les Barets" (1929), the illusion of love and physical misunderstandings in "Eve" (1930), and death in "Claire" (1931). His delicate style, unarticulated and elegant narration, combined with his moralistic moderation, won him many readers. In the three volumes of Les Fates Sentiments (1934-36), he attempted a social novel following the fortunes of a ceramics manufacturing family, but with Les Romanesques (1938) he returned to his specialty, the marital novel. He made some very fervent National Socialist statements just before the Second World War, which led to a decline in his reputation after the war, but he was revered by New Right writers such as Roger Nimier. In addition to novels, he also published a number of excellent collections of essays, including Les Fêtes d'Amour (1932), Les Happinesses d'Arbezieux (1935), and Essays on Love (1927).
