Bull-roarer

A groaning tree. A thin, oval board is tied to the end of a string, which is swung vigorously by holding the end of the string. When the board cuts through the air, it produces a sound similar to that of a cow bellowing. The smaller the board and the shorter the string, the higher the sound. In primitive societies, it is used as a magical instrument to resonate the voices of gods, demons, and ancestors. This instrument is a so-called taboo instrument, and it is strictly forbidden for women to see it. うなり木。薄い長円形の板を紐の先に結びつけ，紐の末端を持って勢いよく振りまわす楽器。板が風を切って牛が吼えるような音を出す。板が小さく紐が短いものほど音が高い。未開社会では，魔法の楽器として神霊，悪魔，祖先の声を響かせるために用いる。この楽器は，いわゆるタブーの楽器であり，女性が見ることを厳しく禁じている。楽器分類法では振り回す気鳴楽器に属する。【柿木吾郎】
