…First, the oratorio in Latin and the oratorio in Italian were born in Rome. The former developed from liturgical drama in the early 17th century, and was typified by G. Calissimi. It is a prose poem (with original poems also inserted) that paraphrases passages from the Bible, and is characterized by dramatic expression in the monody style and emphasis on the chorus, such as Jephtha (before 1650) and The Judgement of Solomon (1669). …

Catholics, who suffered a great deal from the defection of Protestants, turned their attention to the dramatic style of opera, which had recently emerged and was gaining popularity at the time, as a means of educating their followers, and by applying this style to religious themes, they created the oratorio. It is significant that Giacomo Carissimi (1605-74), an early master of the oratorio, was active in the Collegio (college) of the Society of Jesus, which was particularly enthusiastic about missionary work at the time. However, this movement soon spread beyond denominations to other countries, and such outstanding oratorio composers as MA Charpentier in France, Schütz and Bach in Germany, and Handel in England appeared. ...
