A taxonomic group (a class of ferns) proposed by American C.B. Beck in 1960, which is a plant of the Paleozoic Era (Upper Devonian to Carboniferous). It is also called progymnosperms. It was revealed that Archaeopteris (known only from its leaves), which was in the Protopteridiales order and was considered the most primitive of ferns, and Callixylon (known only from its stems), which was placed in the Pitus order of gymnosperms, were actually two parts of the same plant.
