Engakuji Temple

Japanese: 円覚寺 - えんがくじ

Located in Yamanouchi, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, this is the head temple of the Engakuji school of the Rinzai sect. Its mountain name is Zuirokuzan. It is the second most important Zen temple in the Five Mountains of Kamakura after Kenchoji. It was founded in 1282 by Hojo Tokimune. It was founded by the Song Dynasty Zen monk Mugai Sogen and played a central role in the Zen culture of Kamakura. The Shariden, a designated national treasure, was moved from Taiheiji, one of the Five Mountains of Kamakura, after it was burned down in 1563, and is a valuable relic that conveys the architectural style of Song Dynasty Zen temples. In addition to the Engakuji Temple Bell, a national treasure, there are many relics from the Kamakura period, such as the "Statue of Bukko Kokushi." The temple grounds and gardens are designated historic sites and scenic spots.

神奈川県鎌倉市山ノ内にある臨済宗円覚寺派の本山。山号は瑞鹿山。建長寺に次いで鎌倉五山の第2位の禅刹。弘安5 (1282) 年北条時宗の創建。宋の禅僧無学祖元を開山とし，鎌倉禅宗文化の中心的役割を果した。国宝指定の舎利殿は永禄6 (1563) 年焼失後，鎌倉尼五山の1つである太平寺の仏殿を移したもので，宋の禅刹建築様式を伝える貴重な遺構。国宝の円覚寺梵鐘のほか『仏光国師像』など鎌倉時代の遺品が多い。境内・庭園は史跡・名勝に指定されている。
