...In temporary congestion, the damage to tissues and organs is minor, and most recover when the congestion is removed, but if congestion continues for a long time, the damage becomes severe, parenchymal cells degenerate and atrophy, and at the same time, the interstitial connective tissue increases and hardens (this is called congestive sclerosis). Representative examples include brown hardening of the lungs seen in cases of abnormalities of the mitral valve of the heart, and congestive cirrhosis of the liver seen in cases of long-lasting right ventricular dysfunction. A similar condition is congestion, but it differs from congestion in that it is caused by the inflow of arterial blood. ...
