It is a private university. It was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1913 (Taisho 2), became a university under the University Act in 1928 (Showa 3), and transitioned to a new university system in 1948 (Showa 23). As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it consists of eight faculties: Theology, Literature, Integrated Human Sciences, Law, Economics, Foreign Languages, Science and Technology, and International Liberal Arts, and graduate schools: Theology, Philosophy, Literature, Integrated Human Sciences, Law, Economics, Foreign Languages, Global Studies, Science and Technology, and Global Environmental Studies. Associated facilities, it has research institutes for Christian Culture, Medieval Thought, and Ibero-America, as well as Global Environment, International Language and Information, and Global Concern. It is characterized by its international character based on Christian principles, and is committed to international exchange, with many foreign teachers and students.
