…A descendant of the French Capetian dynasty. In 861, Robert was appointed Margrave of Brittany by Charles II, and was responsible for the defense of Brittany against invaders, including the Bretons and the Normans. He was killed in battle at Brissart in 866, leaving behind two sons, Eudes and Robert I. Eude, who made a name for himself by defending Paris from the Normans in 885-886, was promoted by the powerful nobles to become king after the dethronement of Charles III in 887, and this effectively ended the Carolingian system. …
