Kenjiro Shoda

Born: February 25, 1902 in Tatebayashi, Gunma
[Died] March 20, 1977. Mathematician from Ashikaga, Tochigi. Born as the second son of Teiichiro Shoda, founder of Nisshin Flour Milling. Graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1925, and studied in Germany the following year under Emmy Noether. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at Osaka Imperial University (→ Osaka University) in 1933. He introduced abstract algebra to Japan and was a leading figure in the modernization of mathematics in Japan. He became president of Osaka University in 1954, professor emeritus at the same university in 1960, and dean of the Faculty of Fundamental Engineering at the same university in 1962. He became president of Musashi University in 1965 and president of Musashi Gakuen in 1975. His works include Abstract Algebra (1932), The Path to Mathematics (1962), and Introduction to Plural Number Theory (1968). He was awarded the Japan Academy Prize in 1949 and became a member of the academy in 1953. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 1969 and the First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1974. He is the uncle of Empress Michiko, Emperor Akihito, and the great-uncle of Emperor Naruhito.

数学者。日清製粉の創業者，正田貞一郎の二男として生まれる。1925年東京帝国大学数学科を卒業し，翌 1926年ドイツに留学，エミー・ネーターに師事する。帰国後，1933年大阪帝国大学（→大阪大学）教授となる。抽象代数学を日本に紹介し，日本における数学の現代化の先頭に立つ人物となった。1954年大阪大学総長，1960年同大学名誉教授，1962年同大学基礎工学部学部長。1965年武蔵大学学長，1975年武蔵学園学園長。著書に『抽象代数学』（1932），『数学へのみち』（1962），『多元数論入門』（1968）など。1949年日本学士院賞受賞，1953年同会員。1969年文化勲章，1974年勲一等瑞宝章受章。上皇明仁の皇后美智子の伯父，天皇徳仁の大伯父にあたる。
