Seishoji Temple

Seishoji Temple

The head temple of the Shinshu Seisho-ji sect of Buddhism is located in Honmachi, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. The mountain name is Uwanozan. It is commonly called Sabae Mido. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. According to temple legend, Shinran stayed here during his exile in the Hokuriku region. Later, Shinran's fifth son Dosho lived here, and in 1279 (Kōan 2), he and his eldest son Nyokaku built a temple at the current location and named it Shinsho-ji. Later, in 1437 (Eikyō 9), it was renamed Seisho-ji and became a temple at the request of Emperor Gohanazono. One theory is that it was built by Nyokaku, the son of Dosho, a disciple of Nyodo who preached the secret teachings. During the time of the 10th abbot, Hideyoshi, sided with Shibata Katsuie, and the temple was burned down in a military raid by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 (Tensho 11). It was restored under the 15th abbot, Shujo, but was again damaged by fire in 1862 (Bunkyu 2). During the Edo period, it belonged to the Tendai sect under Nikko Rinnoji Temple, and became independent in 1878 (Meiji 11).
