Poet and art critic. Born in Shiba, Tokyo. Real name Makoto. His grandfather was Kawaji Toshiakira. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He started out as a poet by contributing to Kawai Suimei's Bunko and Shijin. In September 1907 (Meiji 40), he attracted attention with the publication of Shinshi Shishou, which included the colloquial poem Hakidame, in Shijin. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he participated in Saijo Yaso's Mirai, and in 1918, he founded the Shoko Poetry Society and became the founder of the poetry magazines Banso, Gendai Shika, Taimatsu, and Shisaku in succession. He nurtured Hirato Renkichi, Murano Shiro, Fukao Sumako, and others. He also participated in the establishment of the Shiwakai (Poetry Association) in 1917 and played an active role as a central figure, founding the magazine Nihon Shijin (Japanese Poets) in 1921. His poetry collections include Roadside Flowers (1910), Voices at Dawn (1921), and Akarui Kaze (1935), as well as a book on poetry called Shigaku (Poetics) (1935).
