Regal Thorny Oyster

Japanese: ショウジョウガイ(猩々貝) - ショウジョウガイ（英語表記）regal thorny oyster

A large bivalve mollusks of the family Polytrichum commune (illustration). The shell is 7 cm long and 8 cm high, but some can reach 10 cm. The left shell is slightly swollen, with 6 to 7 rows of large, long spines protruding from it around the shell, and many rows of thin, short spines in between. The right shell is also slightly swollen, with rows of large and small spines like the left shell. There is also a white triangular part at the top of the shell. The shell is orange or azuki bean in color, and sometimes only the spines are white. The surface of the shell is often dirty with deposits even when the animal is alive.

ウミギクガイ科の大型二枚貝（イラスト）。殻は長さ7cm，高さ8cmであるが10cmに達するものもある。左殻は多少膨らみ，その上には6～7列の大きく長いとげの列が殻のまわりへ出，その間にも細く短いとげの列が多い。また右殻も多少膨らみ，左殻同様に大小のとげの列がある。また殻頂部に白い三角形の部分がある。殻は橙色，またはアズキ色で，ときにとげのみ白いこともある。殻表は生きているときも付着物で汚れていることが多い。
