Razorfish (Solenostomus cyanopterus)

Japanese: カミソリウオ(剃刀魚) - カミソリウオ（英語表記）Solenostomus cyanopterus

A marine fish of the family Ophiostrichidae in the order Syngnathidae (illustration). The body and head are strongly laterally compressed. The long snout is also laterally compressed, and the mouth opens at its tip. The body is covered with bony plates instead of scales, and these protuberances create a lattice-like pattern on the sides of the body. The Japanese name comes from this thin body shape. The English name is ghost pipefish. It grows to a total length of 15 cm. In terms of classification, it is similar to the syngnathus fish, but differs in that it has a first dorsal fin consisting of five spines, large pelvic and caudal fins, and the female has a brood pouch, not the male.

ヨウジウオ目カミソリウオ科の海水魚（イラスト）。体と頭が強く側扁する。長くのびた吻（ふん）も側扁し，口はその先端に開く。うろこの代りに骨板が体を覆い，その隆起部が体側に格子状の模様をつくっている。和名はこの薄い体型に由来する。英名はghost pipefish(ユウレイヨウジウオ)。全長15cmになる。分類上はヨウジウオに近いが，5棘（きよく）からなる第1背びれをもち，腹びれと尾びれが大きく，とくに雄でなく雌に育児囊があるなどの点で異なる。
