...It is mainly used as a continuous pattern, such as diamond-shaped connections, or as a sash pattern based on diagonal lines. Examples include Karahanabishi, a diamond design of a nonexistent flower popular in the Tang Dynasty of China; Saiwaibishi, a type of court pattern in which 4 to 20 flower diamonds make up one large diamond; Shigebishi, a diamond pattern used mainly in textiles and other background patterns in which diamonds are lined up next to each other; Toobishi, a diamond pattern with diamonds spaced apart; Takedabishi, a diamond pattern divided into four parts and used by the Takeda clan of Kai; Irekobishi, a diamond pattern with smaller diamonds placed inside each other; Hishidasuki, a diamond pattern with small diamonds arranged in a sash; and Toridasuki, a bird pattern arranged in a sash with Chinese flowers placed between them. Diamond lattices were often used for the partitions between the inner and outer sanctuaries of medieval esoteric Buddhist temples, and the kogin and hishizashi styles of the Aomori and Akita regions are characterized by their diamond-linked patterns.
