This indicates the degree of turbidity of water, with the degree of turbidity being 1 degree (or 1 ppm) when 1 mg of white clay is contained in 1 liter of distilled water. Water turbidity can be caused by the inclusion of sediment or other suspended solids, chemical changes in dissolved substances, or improper purification methods. Water can be tested using either the turbidimetric method, which compares the water with a standard solution of each turbidity level, or the optical method (wherein light is shone on the liquid to be measured and the turbidity is measured based on the reaction). The water quality standards based on the Water Supply Act stipulate that the turbidity of tap water should be 2 degrees or less.
