1851‐1914 Austrian economic theorist. He served as professor at the University of Vienna and Minister of Finance. He studied law at Vienna and economics at various universities in Germany before teaching at the University of Innsbruck, but joined the Ministry of Finance in 1889. He was influential in formulating policies such as the introduction of gold coinage and the elimination of sugar subsidies, but due to financial difficulties caused by increasing military spending, he resigned as Minister of Finance in 1904 and became a professor at Vienna University. In the field of economic theory, he expanded and developed the theories of C. Menger together with F. von Wieser, and became a central figure in the Austrian School.
