Glyphus marsupialis (Shrimp)

Japanese: ショウジョウエビ(猩々蝦) - ショウジョウエビ（英語表記）Glyphus marsupialis

A large deep-sea shrimp (illustration) belonging to the family Ophiopogonidae of the Crustacean class, which can reach a body length of 20 cm. It is named for its uniform deep red color. The carapace is not hard. The sides of the cephalothorax have slightly irregular ridges but no special spines. The rostrum is very short and protrudes almost horizontally, continuing behind it as the median ridge of the cephalothorax with 5 to 8 very small spines arranged irregularly. The number and spacing of the teeth are not necessarily consistent. The first and second thoracic legs are large and have pincers, the third thoracic leg is long and thread-like, and the fourth and fifth thoracic legs are significantly smaller, all of which are characteristic of the Ophiopogonidae family.

甲殻綱オキエビ科に属する深海産の体長20cmに達する大型エビ（イラスト）。一様に濃い赤色のためこの名がある。甲は硬くない。頭胸甲の側面にはやや不規則な稜があるほかは特別のとげはない。額角はごく短くてほぼ水平に突き出し，その後方は頭胸甲の正中稜として続き，ごく小さなとげが5～8本不規則に並んでいる。歯の数や間隔は必ずしも一定していない。第1,2胸脚が大きくてはさみをもち，第3胸脚が糸状で長く，第4,5胸脚が著しく小さいことはオキエビ科の特徴をよく表している。
