Barrancabermeja (English spelling)
A city in the western part of Santander State, in north-central Colombia. It is a river port city located on the right bank of the middle Magdalena River, about 270 km north of the capital Bogotá. When the Spaniards arrived in 1536, there was an Indian settlement called La Tora surrounded by a wooden fence here, but the Spaniards renamed it La Tora, which means "vermilion cliff", after the steep cliffs on the nearby riverbank. It later became the center of a cattle ranching area, distributing beef and other products. Since the 1920s, it has rapidly developed as the center of the large-scale oil fields along the Magdalena River. In addition to roads and railways, an oil pipeline was laid to the port of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast, and large refineries and petrochemical plants were built in the city. Population: 136,012 (1985).
