A city on the eastern shore of Lake Erie in northwestern Pennsylvania, United States. The name comes from the Erie tribe of Indians. A French fort was built in 1753, but was later abandoned. In 1795, a US fort and town were built. Since then, it has developed as a port city and industrial city on the shores of Lake Erie. Pulp, iron ore, limestone, coal, oil, and industrial products are loaded and unloaded here. Metal industry is the most important, but food and paper industries are also active. There are also a wide variety of factories producing electric locomotives, power shovels, engines, boilers, plastic products, toys, asbestos products, squeezing machines, and electronic industrial parts. The Perry Memorial, restored in 1963, is the former Dixon Tavern, where fugitive slaves were hidden. Population: 108,718 (1990).
