Cellini, Benvenuto
Born: November 3, 1500, Florence
Died: February 13, 1571. A representative sculptor and metalworker of Italian Mannerism in Florence. His father was an architect and musical instrument maker. At the age of 15, he became an apprentice to the metalworker Andrea di Santo Marcone. In 1519, he went to Rome to study ancient sculpture and was influenced by Michelangelo. He was active mainly in Rome until 1540, during which time he moved between Florence, Venice, and Naples. Works from this period include portrait medals, coins, and jewellery. He stayed in France from 1540 to 1545 at the invitation of King Francis I, and produced the famous "Saltcellar of Francis I" (1540-43, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) and "Nymph of Fontainebleau" (1543-44, Louvre). In 1545 he returned to Florence and produced "Portrait of Cosimo I" (1545-47, Bargello National Gallery), "Perseus" (1545-54, Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence), "Crucifixion" (1562, Escorial Basilica), etc. His "Autobiography", which describes his eventful life, is particularly famous, and it tells the story of his artistic creation as well as the troubled state of Italy in the years following the Sack of Rome in 1527.
