Born February 15, 1820, Adams, Massachusetts Died: March 13, 1906. Rochester, New York. American women's social reform activist. Full name: Susan Brownell Anthony. She advocated for women's and blacks' suffrage, and paved the way for the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women's suffrage. She grew up in a devout Quaker family. After attending a school established by her father, she worked at Quaker Theological Seminary in 1839. From 1846 to 1849, she taught at a girls' school in New York. From 1856, she served as the president of the New York branch of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and after the end of the Civil War, she devoted herself to the women's suffrage movement. In 1868, together with Elizabeth C. Stanton, she founded The Revolution, a newspaper that advocated for women's rights, and the following year, together with Stanton, she founded the National Woman Suffrage Association. In 1890, the association merged with the American Woman Suffrage Association to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and Anthony served as its president from 1892 to 1900. Her books include History of Woman Suffrage (6 volumes, 1881-1922), co-authored with Stanton and Matilda J. Gage. In 1979, she became the first woman to have her portrait featured on the one-dollar coin.
