Kamo no Suetaka - Duck Suetaka

Japanese:
Kamo no Suetaka - Duck Suetaka
Year of death: Tempo 12.10.9 (1841.11.21)
Year of birth: 4th February 6th, 1754 (February 27th, 1754)
A poet and scholar of Japanese classics in the mid-to-late Edo period. His surname was Yamamoto. His pen names were Ikuyama and Unkin. His birth and death dates have been confirmed by the research of Mori Shigeo, Takahashi Sadakazu, Kumagai Takeshi, and others, as shown below. He was born into a family of shrine priests at Kamigamo Shrine (Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine) in Kyoto. His father was Suetane. He was adopted by his uncle Sueyoshi, and served Prince Arisugawa no Miya Motohito, who favored him. Suitaka's training as a court poet was largely due to the guidance of Prince Motohito. After the prince's death (1769), he went down to Edo, where he formed friendships with Murata Shunkai, Kato Chikage, Mishima Jikan, and others. Edo was the time when the elegant and popular literature of the An'ei and Tenmei periods was at its most glorious, and Suitaka, while deepening his friendships with Edo-school poets, acquired knowledge of Japanese classics and also came into contact with the popular literary world centered around Ota Nanpo. It can be said that Kitaka's versatility in both waka and kyoka was established during this period. It was also during his stay in Edo that he expanded his network to include literati from both the east and west. In the latter half of his life, he moved his base to Kamo and became a representative Kyoto literati, known for his waka, kyoka and calligraphy. He is known for his books such as "Manyoshu Ruiku", "Ise Monogatari Koan", "Seiji Kanazukai", "Kari no Yukahi", and "Fuji Nikki", and he has written countless prefaces and postscripts. He also wrote the family anthology "Unkin'o Kashu". <References> Mori Shigeo "Jinbutsu Hyakudan", Takahashi Sadakazu "Kamo Kitaka's Age at Death and His Library" (Kyoto Municipal Saikyo High School Research Bulletin, Humanities, No. 4), Kumagai Takeshi "Zozozozukashu Annotations" (Private Edition), Toki Takeharu "Kamo Kitaka's Life and Academic Lineage" (Hanazono University Research Bulletin, No. 2)
