Commercial Press

Japanese: 商務印書館 - しょうむいんしょかん
Commercial Press
China's largest publishing company during the late Qing and Republican periods. Founded in Shanghai in 1897. At one time it was a joint venture with Japan. It published various textbooks, reference books, magazines such as "Oriental Magazine" and "Monthly Novels," as well as translations of Chinese classics such as "Four Books Conglomerates," "Collection of Books," and "World Library," as well as foreign books. In 1924, it also founded and operated the Oriental Library, which had the largest collection of books in the Orient. Together with its publishing activities, which at one time accounted for half of all Chinese publications, it contributed greatly to the development of Chinese culture. However, the Oriental Library was burned down by Japanese artillery fire during the Shanghai Incident in 1932, and the Commercial Press and the Republic of China government complained to the world about the atrocities committed by the Japanese military. Currently, publishing activities are continued through the Commercial Press in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in mainland China. In 1993, Commercial Press International Limited, a joint-stock company operating in five printing locations (Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia), was established.
