It is the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar. Originally it was a Chinese festival, and together with Zhongyuan (July 15th) and Xiangyuan (October 15th), it was called the Three Sources. The night of Shangyuan is known as Lantern Festival, and a particularly wide variety of events are held. Xiangyuan was not adopted in Japan, but Shangyuan became established along with Zhongyuan. It is also called Little New Year and Women's New Year, and various folk events such as Sagicho and Dondoyaki are held. In particular, the eating of red bean porridge and related customs spread throughout the country. However, with the spread of the solar calendar, these folk events shifted from the original Shangyuan date and became events held on January 15th of the current calendar, just like Zhongyuan.
