samāvartana (English spelling)

…The word comes from the Sanskrit verb meaning “to bathe,” and its original meaning is “one who has bathed.” When a student returns home after completing his/her studies of the Vedas under his/her teacher, he/she performs a ceremony called “samāvartana,” during which he/she bathes to purify himself/herself, and thus the term “snataka” arose. Originally, the term was used to refer only to the Brahmin class, but in later times it came to be used to refer to all Brahmins, including Kshatriyas and Vaishyas.
