The biography of Prince Shotoku at Jōgū

Japanese: 上宮聖徳太子伝補闕記 - じょうぐうしょうとくたいしでんほけつき

A biography of Prince Shotoku. Published in the early Heian period. Author unknown. It is said to have been compiled by adding the family diary of Kashiwade no Omi (who served the Emperor and the Imperial Court in the pre-Taika period) to earlier biographies of the prince, such as the Nihon Shoki. It gives a roughly chronological account of events from the prince's conception and birth through his death, through the suicide of Prince Yamashiro no Oe, and up until the downfall of the Soga clan. It contains many mystical elements and legends, and had a great influence on the subsequent formation of views of Prince Shotoku. → Theory that he was Emperor Shotoku
