Shogawa

Japanese:
Shogawa
A river that flows through the western part of Gifu and Toyama prefectures and empties into Toyama Bay. It is 115km long. It originates from Mount Eboshi (1625m) in the northwest of Gifu prefecture, cuts deeply into the Hida mountain range, flows north, leaves the mountains near Kanaya in the south of Tonami city, forms the Tonami Plain, and flows further north before emptying into Toyama Bay at Imizu city. The river water is supplied to the irrigation canals of the Tonami Plain in a capillary manner from the Shogawa-Aguchi Dam, which was built in 1940 at the intake point in Kanaya. The Shogawa Gorge is known for its beautiful valley and hot springs. It has a wealth of hydroelectric power, and there are many dams such as Miboro Dam, Hatogaya Dam, Tsubakihara Dam, Soyama Dam, and Komaki Dam. The construction of the dams has reduced the transport of sediment, and the riverbed downstream has dropped significantly. The upstream areas of Shirakawa-go in Gifu prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama prefecture are known for their Gassho-zukuri houses.

Shogawa

This is the former town area in the southern part of Tonami City, in the western part of Toyama Prefecture. It is located where the Shogawa River flows into the Tonami Plain. In 1952, the four villages of Higashiyamami, Aoshima, Okami, and Taneda were merged to form the town. In 2004, it was merged with Tonami City. Kanaya, the central area, occupies the apex of the alluvial fan and has long been a valley-mouth settlement leading to Gokayama upstream of the Shogawa River, and has developed as a town for the collection and distribution of driftwood from the Hida Mountains, as well as a lumber and woodworking town. Drifting timber disappeared with the completion of Komaki Dam in 1930, but plain woodwork made from zelkova, horse chestnut, and pine has been passed down as a traditional craft. The former Taneda Village area is a producer of high-quality rice seeds. It is known for the Shogawa Gorge and Shogawa Onsen, and is also a tourist base for Gokayama.
