1808‐89 French novelist and critic. A monarchist of aristocratic descent, he was a provocative dandy who despised bourgeois society and positivism, a militant Catholic, and a late romantic. Influenced by Byron and Joseph de Maistre, he wrote in his own unique style a tragic and sometimes supernatural world dominated by sinful love, the hell of humanity, and Satanism in novels such as The Bewitched Woman (1854), The Married Priest (1865), and Demonic Women (1874).
