French novelist and critic. A monarchist of aristocratic descent, he was a provocative dandy who despised bourgeois society and positivism, a militant Catholic, and a late romantic. Influenced by Byron and Joseph de Maistre, he wrote in his own unique style a tragic and sometimes supernatural world dominated by sinful love, the hell of humanity, and Satanism in novels such as The Bewitched Woman (1854), The Married Priest (1865), and Demonic Women (1874).

フランスの小説家，批評家。貴族の血を引く君主制主義者。ブルジョア社会と実証主義を軽蔑した挑発的なダンディ，戦闘的なカトリック教徒であり，遅れてやって来たロマン主義者といわれる。バイロン，ジョゼフ･ド･メーストルの影響を受け，罪深い恋，人間性の地獄，悪魔主義が支配する悲劇的でときに超自然的な世界を，小説《魅入られた女》(1854)，《妻帯司祭》(1865)，《悪魔のような女たち》(1874)などにおいて，独特な文体で描いた。
