A snail shell of the family Pectiniidae (illustration). The shell is 14 cm high and 4.5 cm in diameter. It is long and spindle-shaped with 10 layers. Except for the reddish apex, each layer is well inflated and the edges are somewhat angular. The surface is covered with a thick, velvety skin, but as the shell grows, the upper layers become bald. Thin ribs run horizontally, and the upper layers also have vertical ribs. The last layer has a long, thin water tube extending from it. The shell opening is egg-shaped and extends to the water tube beak, forming a long, thin water tube groove. The operculum is blackish brown, egg-shaped, leathery and somewhat thick.

イトマキボラ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻の高さ14cm，径4.5cm。長い紡錘形で，巻きは10層に及ぶ。赤みを帯びた殻頂を除いて各層はよく膨らみ，周縁は多少角ばる。表面はビロード様の厚い皮をかむるが，成長すると上方の層でははげる。細い肋を横にめぐらし，上方の層では縦にも肋がある。最後の巻きは細く長く水管嘴（すいかんし）がのびる。殻口は卵形で水管嘴までのびて，細長い水管溝をつくる。ふたは黒褐色で卵形，革質でやや厚い。
