A port city located at the mouth of the Geumgang River in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. It has an area of 377.72 square kilometers and a population of 272,129 (2000). It was promoted to a city in 1949 and merged with Okgo-gun in 1995. Since opening in 1899, it has grown significantly as an export port for Honam America, but the severe accumulation of sediment at the mouth of the Geumgang River has caused problems with its port functions. Industries such as plywood, brewing, papermaking, and footwear have developed, and it has grown into Jeollabuk-do's number one industrial city.
