〘noun〙① A person with great strength; A powerful man. Particularly from the end of the Heian period onwards, an attendant who shaved his head and served the emperor, head priest, nobles and samurai did heavy manual labor. He accompanied his master when he went out, carrying a palanquin , steering a horse, and carrying a naginata . A powerful priest; a blue priest; a sumo wrestler. *From the Kotohira Honpōgen period (around 1220): "Kamata Jiro Masakiyo was sent as an emissary, carrying a palanquin and a rickshaw man, to hurriedly welcome him." *From the Takemukiga-ki (1349), part 2: "The rickshaw man was given a small amount by the Kajii Palace." ② In early modern times, an attendant who performed heavy labor without shaving his head. [Essays, Kiyū Shoran (1830)] ③ A sumo wrestler. 〘名〙① 力の強い者。力持ち。とくに、平安末期以後、髪をそった姿をし、院・門跡・公家・武家などに仕えて力仕事にたずさわった従者。輿(こし)をかつぎ、馬の口取りをし、長刀(なぎなた)を持つなどして主人の外出の供をした。力者法師。青法師。力士。※金刀比羅本保元(1220頃か)中「鎌田二郎正清を使者として、力者(リキシャ)共に輿かかせ、いそぎ迎に遣しけり」※竹むきが記(1349)下「りきしゃ、梶井の宮より少少給はす」② 近世、頭を剃らないままで力役を勤めた従者。〔随筆・嬉遊笑覧(1830)〕③ 相撲取り。力士。※唐鏡(鎌倉後)六「仏の霊骨不朽にして、劫火にもやけず、〈略〉力者撃にもやぶれず」 〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕
