Since ancient times, people have tried to make paper easier to write on and to preserve it for a long time. For example, there are techniques such as beating the paper to make it smooth (uchigami), polishing the paper with a jewel or tusk, and dyeing it brown with ambrosia to repel insects. Gradually, decorative techniques were developed, such as wax paper, in which paper is placed on a woodblock with a carved design and polished with a jewel or tusk to create a pattern with shiny lines, or colored paper dyed with various plants such as sappan, kariyasu, and indigo.
