Onomichi Town Magistrate - Onomichimachibugyo

...Initially, under the control of the Mitogi County Magistrate, each town was assigned one town elder, two group leaders, one chief officer, and ten monthly officials, who took turns running the town administration. In 1715 (Shotoku 5), when the Onomichi Town Magistrate was established, he came to have jurisdiction over the town administration, the Onomichi temples and shrines, and land and sea transport, especially the domain's Tsude annual tax treasury, Osaka tome (a rice dumping business), tatami mat and tobacco transport, and the inspection of stolen goods. The number of households increased from 724 in 1638, to 1,057 in 1702 (Genroku 15), to 1,685 in 1720 (Kyoho 5), and to 2,926 in 1825 (Bunsei 8) (with 9,488 people)....
