Muḥammad b.'Abd al‐Wahhāb

Muḥammad b.'Abd al‐Wahhāb
1703‐91
A religious leader in the Najd region of the Arabian Peninsula. He was from the Tamim tribe and was born in Uyayna in the Najd region. After completing his studies in Medina, he traveled for many years to study Islam in Iraq, Syria, and Iran. After returning home, he began to preach a strict restorationist doctrine that emphasized the oneness of God, based only on the Quran and Sunnah, at least by 1740. His ideas were derived from those of Ibn Hanbal and are said to have been greatly influenced by those of Ibn Taymiyya. He was driven out of his homeland in 1744 or a few years later, but was protected by the House of Saud, based in Dar'iyya in Najd, and his ideas spread throughout the Arabian Peninsula as the House of Saud expanded its influence.
