Unitarian - Yunitterian (English spelling) Unitarian

It refers to a sect that opposes the belief in the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which is the central doctrine of Christian orthodoxy, and asserts the unity of God, and that Jesus is not God. Unitarianism in the strict sense appeared about half a century after the Reformation. Notable Unitarians in England since the 17th century include John Biddle, Samuel Clarke, Joseph Priestly, and James Martineau. In America, the first Unitarian church was built in Philadelphia by Priestly, who emigrated from England, and William Ellery Channing founded the American Unitarian Association in 1825. In 1961, it merged with the Universalist Church to form the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Unitarianism was first introduced to Japan by Yano Fumio in 1887 (Meiji 20) (Yubin Hochi Shimbun, July of the same year). Around 1909, Kanda Saichiro, Minami Ryo, Kishimoto Nobuta, Abe Isoo and others edited and wrote the journal "Unitarian". "Unitarian" later changed its title to "Religion" and merged with "Rikugo Magazine", the oldest Christian magazine in Japan, but ceased publication in 1921 (Taisho 10).

The inaugural general meeting of the Japan Unitarian Association was held in 1948 (Showa 23). The Tokyo Kiitsu Church (first president: Imaoka Shinichiro) was also established as a church related to Unitarianism. The following year, 1949, the Japan Unitarian Association changed its name to the Japan Free Religion Association and began publishing the association's journal, Creation. The journal continued to be published under different names, such as Free Religion, Mahoroba, and Creation. In 1952, the association changed its name to the Free Religion Federation and joined the International Free Religion Federation (IARF). The IARF was founded in 1900 (Meiji 33) and holds a conference every three years. In 1999 (Heisei 11), the 30th conference was held in Vancouver, Canada, with the theme "Creating a Global Community: The Mission of Religious People."

In 1999, the religious corporation Tokyo Kiichi Church was dissolved after the death of its first chairman, Shinichiro Imaoka, due to a lack of suitable successors and the aging of its members.

キリスト教正統派の中心教義である父と子と聖霊の三位(さんみ)一体Trinityの信条に反対し、神の単一性Unityを主張し、イエスは神ではないとする一派の人をいう。厳密な意味でのユニテリアニズムUnitarianismは宗教改革後約半世紀たって現れている。17世紀以後イギリスにおける著名なユニテリアンとしてはビドルJohn Biddle、クラークSamuel Clarke、プリーストリーJoseph Priestly、マーティノーJames Martineauなどがあげられる。アメリカでは、イギリスから移住したプリーストリーによってフィラデルフィアに初めてユニテリアン教会が建てられ、チャニングWilliam Ellery Channingが1825年にアメリカ・ユニテリアン協会を設立した。1961年にはユニバーサリスト教会と合同して、ユニテリアン・ユニバーサリスト協会が組織された。

　日本にユニテリアンが初めて紹介されたのは、1887年（明治20）矢野文雄によってである（同年7月郵便報知新聞紙上）。1909年ごろには神田佐一郎、三並良(みつなみりょう)、岸本能武太(のぶた)、安部磯雄(あべいそお)らが機関誌『ゆにてりあん』の編集・執筆を行った。『ゆにてりあん』はのちに『宗教』に改題し、さらに日本最古のキリスト教雑誌である『六合(りくごう)雑誌』と合併したが、1921年（大正10）終刊した。

　1948年（昭和23）日本ユニテリアン協会の創立総会が開かれた。またユニテリアンに関連する教会として東京帰一(きいつ)教会（初代会長今岡信一良(しんいちろう)）がつくられた。翌49年日本ユニテリアン協会は日本自由宗教協会と改称し、協会機関誌『創造』を刊行した。機関誌はその後『自由宗教』『まほろば』『創造』と誌名を変えながら発行され続けた。52年には自由宗教連盟と改称し、国際自由宗教連盟（IARF）に加盟した。IARFは1900年（明治33）に創設され、3年に一度大会を開催しているが、1999年（平成11）には「地球共同体の創造　宗教者の使命」というテーマのもとにカナダのバンクーバーで第30回大会が開かれた。

　1999年宗教法人東京帰一教会は、初代会長今岡信一良の没後、後継者に適当な人材がなく、また会員の老齢化などにより解散した。
