An industrial city in North Hamgyong Province, North Korea, facing the Sea of Japan. Location of the province. Directly controlled city. One of the oldest trading ports, opened in 1908, it was once a logistics base for Japan's advance into the continent, with steel and oil factories and a direct railway to "East Manchuria". After liberation in 1945, the steelworks were damaged in the Korean War, but were rebuilt with new equipment, becoming one of the leading metal industry bases. The main facilities are the Chongjin Steelworks and the Kim Chaek Steelworks, which receive refined iron ore from Musan Iron Mine through a pipeline and produce products such as steel, steel, and special steel. Other facilities include the Chongjin Chemical Fiber Factory, a shipyard, the Ranam Porcelain Factory, and a confectionery factory. The city developed along the coast, separated by the Yusun River which flows into Gyeongseong Bay, but in 1960, the city was reorganized into a metropolitan area with the incorporation of Funyeong and Ranam districts. As the political, economic and cultural center of the northeastern region of North Korea, it is home to government agencies and cultural and arts institutions, as well as the Chongjin University of Technology, the University of Mining and Metallurgy, and the University of Education. The port is divided into a fishing port and a trading port, and there are shipping routes from Chongjin to Vladivostok in the Russian Federation and Niigata in Japan.
