Pintail duck - Pintail

A bird of the family Anatidae in the order Anseriformes. It is about 70 centimeters long, has a longer neck than other species, and a body shape suited to long-distance flight. It breeds widely in the Holarctic region, but also reaches Africa, India, South Asia, and the Philippines. Some migrate from North America to Japan, and are highly gregarious. Separate subspecies have evolved on Kerguelen Island and Crozet Island in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, the yellow-billed pintail is found from the Andes to South Georgia in the Antarctic, the white-tailed pintail is found from the Antilles in Central America to South America and the Galapagos Islands, and the red-billed pintail is found in Africa.

鳥綱カモ目カモ科の鳥。全長約70センチメートルで頸(くび)が他種より長く、体形も長飛行に適し、全北区に広く繁殖しているが、アフリカ、インド、南アジア、フィリピンにまで渡る。北アメリカから日本に渡来するものがあり、群集性が強い。南半球のケルゲレン島とクロゼット島にそれぞれ別の亜種が分化している。そのほか、キバシオナガガモはアンデス山地から南極圏のサウス・ジョージア島まで、ホオジロオナガガモは中央アメリカのアンティル諸島から南アメリカおよびガラパゴス諸島に、アカハシオナガガモはアフリカに分布している。
