Trachycarpus excelsus; hemp palm

Trachycarpus excelsus; hemp palm
An evergreen tall tree of the palm family. It is also called Wajuro (Japanese palm). Native to southern Kyushu. There are no wild ones at present, and it is widely cultivated in warm areas. It is the most cold-resistant of the palm family, so it can be cultivated as far as the Tohoku region. It has no branches, but produces many large leaves at the end of the trunk. It is dioecious and produces yellow-white flowers in spikes in early summer. Young leaves are bleached to make hats and mats, and the strong fibers (so-called palm bark) that remain in the sheath of the trunk are used as material for ropes and brushes. A species that is very similar to this species and is often cultivated is the Tojuro (Chinese palm) T. wagnerianus . Native to southern mainland China, it is smaller overall than the Wajuro, and can be distinguished by the fact that part of the mid-vein on the underside of the leaf protrudes away from the leaf surface.
