Wilhelm Canaris

German admiral. Born in Dortmund. Since working as an intelligence officer for the German Navy in Spain during World War I, Canaris's relationship with Spain has strengthened. During the early years of the Versailles regime, he illegally built submarines in Spain, and after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he worked hard to provide military aid to General Franco. After Germany declared rearmament in 1935, Canaris served as head of the Wehrmacht's foreign intelligence service, but he gradually became skeptical of Hitler's war plans and reign of terror, and after the start of World War II, he became a central figure in the plan to overthrow Hitler together with General Ludwig August Theodor Beck (1880-1944) of the army. Although he was not directly involved in the attempted assassination of Hitler in July 1944, he was arrested on suspicion and executed in a concentration camp on April 9, 1945, just before the end of the war.

ドイツの提督。ドルトムント生まれ。第一次世界大戦中にスペインでドイツ海軍の諜報(ちょうほう)活動に従事して以来、同国との関係が強まり、ベルサイユ体制初期には非合法の潜水艦建造をスペインで行ったり、スペイン内戦（1936～1939）の勃発(ぼっぱつ)後フランコ将軍への軍事援助実現に奔走したりした。カナリスは1935年のドイツ再軍備宣言以降、国防軍外国諜報部長の地位にあったが、ヒトラーの戦争計画やテロ支配をしだいに懐疑するようになり、第二次世界大戦の開始以後は、陸軍のベックLudwig August Theodor Beck（1880―1944）大将らとともにヒトラー打倒計画の中心人物となった。1944年7月のヒトラー暗殺未遂事件には直接関与しなかったが、容疑を受けて逮捕され、終戦直前の1945年4月9日、強制収容所で処刑された。
