German painter, sculptor, and stage designer. Born in Stuttgart. From 1920 to 1929, he taught sculpture and mural painting at the Bauhaus, but placed emphasis on dance as a comprehensive art form, and in 1923 he created the stage design for "Triadic Ballet." Influenced by Cubism in his early years, he pursued sharp and rational forms, but did not move toward excessive pure abstraction, and established his own unique style of abstract expression that preserved the natural forms of the subject. His representative paintings include "Group of 14 Figures Shaping an Imaginary Architecture" (1930, in the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne).

ドイツの画家，彫刻家，舞台美術家。シュツットガルト生れ。1920年―1929年，バウハウスで彫刻や壁画制作の指導に当たるが，総合芸術として舞踊を重視し，1923年には《トリアディック（３組の）・バレエ》の舞台美術を手がける。初期にはキュビスムから影響を受けたが，シャープで合理的な形態を追求しながらも過度の純粋抽象に向かわず，対象の自然的形態をとどめる独自の抽象表現を確立した。絵画の代表作には《想像建築を形づくる14人の群像》（1930年，ケルン，ワルラフ・リヒャルツ美術館蔵）などがある。
