Palm tree

Japanese: シュロチク
Palm tree
An evergreen shrub of the palm family native to southern China. It was introduced to Japan via the Ryukyu Islands and has been cultivated as an ornamental plant for about 300 years. The stem grows to about 3m in height, has no branches, and has 6-9 leaves at the top. The petiole is long and the leaf blade is semicircular and fan-shaped, deeply lobed into 10-18 pieces. Dioecious. It is more cold-resistant than the Chinese bamboo, and can survive the winter outdoors in warm areas. There are also variegated horticultural varieties. Propagate by dividing the plant.
